Learning piano is a challenging pastime. Mastering hand positions, scales, pedals, and complex compositions can be time-consuming and frustrating. However, if you stick with it, you will be rewarded with more than just music.
Here are five life lessons learning piano will teach you.
1. Start Slowly
When it comes to learning a new piece of music on the piano, there’s no point diving into the deep end – especially if it’s a difficult composition. If you start out slowly, you’re sure to progress further. The same goes for your professional and personal life. Always create a solid foundation, rather than rushing into things without thorough preparation.
2. Remember the Big Picture
Every now and again we let the little things get the best of us. A bad day, even a bad hour, can leave us doubting ourselves. If we can overcome these smaller set backs, we can begin to see the bigger picture. When we play piano, too, we can become fixated on difficult sections. But, if we can work through these without giving up, we will eventually see – or hear – the big picture.
3. Avoid Making the Same Mistakes
At the piano, we often repeat our mistakes. This can be frustrating for you, and for your music teacher. Not only that, but making the same mistakes again and again is a waste of your time. Playing the piano reminds us to focus on our mistakes, learn from them, and avoid them in the future.
4. Stay On Tempo
When we fumble while playing piano, does the metronome stop? No. Similarly, when something goes wrong in our life, time keeps on moving – and we’ve got to keep up. This means working and studying when we have to, checking things off our to-do lists, and taking some well-deserved R&R at the end of the day.
5. Never Give Up, Even When We Make Mistakes
Although we try our very best to avoid repeating our mistakes, sometimes it can’t be helped. And that’s OK. The thing is, even if we mess up one section of a composition ninety-nine times, we will play it perfectly – eventually. Even when things go wrong, even when things seem impossible, playing piano teaches us to never give up.
